KANSAS CITY ARTIST COALITION
Why do I sew? Because the process of sewing the canvas has long been a tradition in my family. Early on as a painter, I was excited to find it again hidden in 19th century epically large American landscape paintings. When I stitch canvas together and pull it over a frame, I find it echoes our communal process of imperfectly piecing together a life, relationships, families, traditions, faith, even our connection to the environment. And every piece is under strain revealing both our failures and our efforts. So too, when my work is stretched over the canvas, the imperfections are magnified, as well as the beauty. I distress the paint with mineral spirits to reveal the makeup of the raw pigments. To me, this demonstrates the wear and tear of time.
Wy do I use symbol? Although I love abstract painting, I began to push toward symbols to connect with more viewers. As a hobby, I studied symbols for over decade, even focusing my master’s thesis on the topic of dreamwork in literature and art. Dreamwork is the study of symbols and our personal connection to them through word play and association. In my art you’ll find personal symbols I chose to share. Essentially, I want my work to function like remembered dreams giving insight and direction to the viewer— its personal meaning growing and changing over time.
When I began my work as an artist twenty years ago, I said I wanted it to be about healing. Now, I say mending.
I hope each of my pieces finds a home where it can be a reminder of the beauty of imperfection, and the wholeness that comes through the struggle to mend our words, our relationships, and our view of a better future for our planet.
