POLLY ALICE creates dream landscapes, neo-primitive illustrations and poster designs, and soft sculpture paintings with imperfect stitching. Polly earned her BFA in Studio Art from Messiah College in Pennsylvania and her MFA from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. Her art has been published in US newspapers and magazines, most recently Rattle Magazine, and is showing internationally from Santa Monica to the Netherlands. She is a teacher, professor, speaker, and founder of Flying Ketchup Press, where she “curates” galleries of talent inside small sharable packages. Inspiration

My favorite master artists are Chagall, Picasso, Jacob Lawrence, Van Gogh, and Hilma af Klint. I love line, and aspire to find the weight and emotion of a line: from the curve of a smile to the long limbs of a graceful branching tree, or the kinetic energetic loops of handwriting we hold dear.

Techniques

I use archival mixed media applications and eco friendly supplies. I work primarily with oils and mineral pigments. I make my own canvases from upcycled sewn upholstery fabric or vintage framed birch panels.

Career Highlights

I credit much of my creative work and symbol studies from my research that gained me the 2014 Ernest Hartmann Award from the International Association for the Study of Dreams from Berkeley, CA on the Subconscious Creative Process for writers and illustrators.
